Argentina qualified twice for the World Cup in the 1960s. In 1962 they did not get past the group stage. Four years later, the Argentines were eliminated by England. During this quarterfinal match there was a lot of commotion. The German referee sent Argentine captain Rattin off the field for incessant protests. However, the German did not speak a word of Spanish and Rattin refused to leave the field. It took ten minutes before the match could continue. After that, the match degenerated into an ordinary kicking match, with the English goal by Geoff Hurst as the only highlight. Afterwards, coach Alf Ramsey's English players were not allowed to change shirts and he called the opponent animals afterwards. The Argentines were furious with the arbitration, questioned the neutrality of the referee, sent all journalists home and considered leaving FIFA. Because of these incidents, FIFA decided to introduce yellow and red cards from now on.
