In the first game, Peru still trailed 0-2 against Bulgaria, but a spectacular make-up race resulted in a 3-2 victory. The second match was won 3-0 against Morocco. The last game was lost 1-3 to West Germany. Peru faced Brazil in the quarterfinals. In the knockout phase, the Brazilians lost 4-2. Brazil eventually won this World Cup. Peruvian Cubillas scored in every game. In the year 1978, Peru also participated in the World Cup in Argentina. Peru was in a group with the Netherlands, Scotland and Iran. The first game was won 3-1 after trailing 0-1. The second game against the Netherlands ended in 0-0. Peru reached the Second Round by beating Iran 4-1. In the second round, Peru entered a group with Argentina, Brazil and Poland. All three games were lost with a goal difference of -10. The last game against Argentina (6-0) in particular had a heavy air of bribery. Especially the Peruvian goalkeeper Quiroga was designated as a scapegoat, because he was born in Argentina.
