The mascot's name is Gauchito. A boy wearing Argentina's uniform. His hat (with the text ARGENTINA '78), neckerchief and whip are typical of gauchos. The COPA casual socks are also completely in navy blue. The socks are produced in Italy and are made of 85% cotton, 12% nylon and 3% lycra.

The tradition of the official FIFA World Cup mascots started in 1966 during the World Cup in England with a lion named World Cup Willie. Willie was one of the first mascots associated with major sports leagues. The mascots represent a characteristic of the host country, such as flora, fauna or costume.
