In the 1977-78 season, Club Brugge reached the European Cup final. To date, it is the only time a Belgian football club has reached the European Cup final. The final was played at Wembley Stadium against Liverpool. Club Brugge were missing a key player in Raoul Lambert, and it was thanks to goalkeeper Birger Jensen's strong performance that Liverpool didn't take the lead early on. In the second half, Dalglish scored the winning goal for Liverpool. Club Brugge's squad included Georges Leekens, Fons Bastijns, Julien Cools, Rene Vandereycken, and others.
