During the 1982 World Cup, Scotland was in a group with Brazil, Soviet Union and New Zealand. New Zealand won 5-2 in the first game. The second game against Brazil was lost 4-1. In the last and exciting group match, the Soviet Union had to be won. The match ended 2-2 and as a result, just like four years before, Scotland was eliminated by goal difference.
