The 1966 FIFA World Cup was the eighth edition and the host nation was England. The tournament lasted three weeks, from July 11 to July 30. A total of 16 countries took part in the tournament and played in eight different stadiums. England won the World Cup in their own country by beating West Germany 4-2 in the final. In an exciting game it was 2-2 after 90 minutes and an extension had to be played. In overtime, Geoff Hurst scored two goals for England. His first goal is still controversial. Hurst shot the ball against the bottom of the crossbar, after which it crashed into the ground. The linesman approved the goal
